New Rector Announced

The Wardens and Vestry announce the call of the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Harvey to be the seventh Rector of Calvary Episcopal Church. We are joyous with his acceptance of the call.

We are grateful to the Vestry and Search Committee for their diligence and work. Let us rejoice together and welcome Fr. Robert and his delightful wife Anne to our community of faith.

Dear Calvary Church,

It is with great delight and overwhelming joy that I have accepted the call to be your next Rector. Anne and I felt very welcome during our discernment process with your Search Committee and Vestry, and I am honored by this call. We are so eager to join your parish family and the wider community of both Williamsville and the Diocese of Western New York. I especially want to thank all the members of the Search Committee and Vestry who have worked so diligently and tirelessly through this lengthy process. We have felt the Holy Spirit working through every stage of this process.

Over and over again in the past months we heard that so many of you come to Calvary because it is a caring family, because you feel loved and accepted, a quality expressed in the phrase "All are welcome. No exceptions." That means so much to me. Calvary is a place where sacred stories are shared and welcomed: the sacred stories of the people of God in the Bible, the sacred stories of Jesus and his disciples in the Gospels, the sacred stories that each of us bring of our own lives, and the sacred stories of the people we serve in the greater community. Anne and I look forward to sharing our own sacred stories together with you and for those stories to intermingle and intersect in the family of Calvary Church.

We will be moving into the rectory in August in order to settle in before my work among you begins on September 1st. Our first year together will primarily be a time to get to know each other, to build a relationship, and for me to learn what you do and why you do it, to hear your stories and your hopes and dreams for Calvary Church in the future. In the meantime, I hold you in my thoughts and prayers as we make this transition together.

Most sincerely in Christ,

Father Robert Harvey

FAQs for the Summer

When there is no Priest in a parish, who is in charge?

In the Episcopal Church, the Wardens have ecclesiastical authority in any congregation during a transition between clergy. Cari Evans and Jim Greno will have responsibility for oversight of the staff and all operations at Calvary until the new Rector begins.

Will our Worship Schedule change?

No. Father Thomas Mitchell will be celebrant and preacher at 7 am on Wednesdays and 4 pm on Saturdays. Pastor Tim Madsen will be celebrant and preacher at noon on Thursdays. In July, Mother Judy Burrows will be celebrant and preacher on Sundays at 8 & 10 am. In August, Mother Alison Martin (August 6 & 13) and Canon Cathy Dempesy-Sims (August 20 & 27) will celebrate and preach.

What if we need to arrange for a funeral?

Please call Alice Brown (633-7800) who will call Cari Evans; either Alice or Cari will call Fr. Thomas or Pastor Tim, who will meet with you and your family.

What if I would like to arrange a hospital visit or home communion for myself or a family member?

Please call Alice Brown (633-7800), who will contact Sharon Jackson, our Pastoral Care Minister, to arrange for someone to bring communion to a home. Alice will call Father Thomas or Pastor Tim to visit someone who is critically ill in the hospital. She will inform Cari Evans and Jim Greno of all arrangements.

We have four teams of Eucharistic Visitors who are licensed to bring communion to homes. The Pastoral Care Team will continue to meet on the second Thursday of the month to review care plans and ensure that we stay connected to members who are homebound. Please do not hesitate to inform Alice of any pastoral care concerns.

How do I arrange for someone to be on our Prayer List?

Call or email Alice Brown, who will send names to our Prayer Chain every Tuesday morning.

What if I'd like to schedule a committee meeting or publicity for an event?

Contact Cari Evans, who will coordinate your plans with Alice Brown.

  • New Search Committee News - Latest Update

    July 4, 2017

Listening to our wardens on Sunday, as they announced that Calvary's 7th rector, The Rev. Dr. Robert William Harvey, will begin his ministry on September 1st, was an incredibly emotional and rewarding experience - the culmination of an amazing eighteen-month journey. On behalf of the Rector Search Committee, I want to share what an honor and a blessing it has been to represent the congregation in this process and to thank you for all your support through this lengthy process. We took our responsibility very seriously, we listened to you, we listened to others who have been involved in a search process, we listened to the candidates, and we listened to the Holy Spirit, whose guiding presence always was with us. We followed the process faithfully, and along the way we encountered challenges, surprises, frustrations, and some amazing people, from whom we heard stories of personal faith journeys and through whom Christ's abiding love has worked miracles. This has been an incredibly spiritual and intimate experience, which filled our hearts, strengthened our faith, and we pray will bear fruit for many years to come.

Personally, I want to thank you for reading these updates. (...Uh, you did, right?!? Well, they're still on the website, in case you missed any!!) and tell you what a gift it has been to be the first line of communication, so to speak, from the committee to the congregation. Transparency and confidentiality are an odd couple, particularly while my task was to keep you updated even when events couldn't be shared with me! I have learned that it's all about being trusting, faithful, and open to God's Will. Now, signing off ... Yours in Christ, EBH

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

    (Joshua 1:9)
